What is Scalp Micropigmentation? 

Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is an advanced cosmetic process that uses micro-needles to insert pigment into the hair follicles. The hair pigmentation will create the appearance of a natural appearing shaved head of hair or a fuller head of hair if there are patchy areas of hair loss. Usually, the course of an SMP treatment looks like the following: 

During an initial consultation, the Doctor Edges team will determine the right shade of pigment and what kind of hairline you want.  After that comes the first treatment. The pigment will be applied to create each follicle, which can irritate the skin and form scabs. The scalp will appear red at first, but that fades in a few days. Scabs typically fall off within four days to reveal a light layer of pigment. 

The second treatment is usually one month following. More pigment will be inserted to create the desired color and increase density. A darker shade is usually used during this phase. It will be the last opportunity to make any requests or ask any more questions about your SMP. Each round of treatment takes between three and five hours. 

Sometimes there is a third treatment, if necessary. Some practitioners require a third treatment and others only recommend it if the pigment seems to be fading. If there is a third treatment, the pigment will be applied again to create a finished look. 

Who is Scalp Micropigmentation for?

What is the difference between Scalp Micropigmentation vs. Tattoos? 

We are depositing pigment into the skin at a shallower depth than tattoos, only about 2mm into the dermis. We are making small micro dots, not shading or drawing lines as in tattoos. This provides a more natural appearance. We use only a medical-grade permanent pigment that decreases the risk of fading into different colors or appearing too saturated once it heals. 

How do I prepare for a SMP treatment with a previous hair transplant?  

While hairstyle is important, most patients just have to wash their hair before their appointment. If you are male, a low cut done with a 2 or 3 guard is best. Patients do not require any specific preparation, but it's important to note that they won't be able to drive themselves post-treatment. Local numbing will be administered before the procedure. 

What is the downtime for a SMP procedure?

After an SMP treatment, there is virtually no downtime; it is simply important to adhere to the post-care instructions, particularly regarding hair washing, during the healing phase. 

How soon can I resume regular activities after SMP? 

It is recommended to refrain from intense exercise for three days. Avoid sweating, saunas, steam rooms, Jacuzzis, and other hot, damp environments during the initial three days post-SMP procedure. For the first week, avoid wearing tight hats that may cause friction on the treated area. Refrain from using powders, concealers, hair products such as gels and hair spray, or alcohol-based products on the scalp for two weeks after SMP. 

Is SMP a painful procedure?

What are the risks associated with getting a SMP treatment?
