Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)

What is Scalp Micropigmentation?

Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is an advanced cosmetic process that uses micro-needles to insert pigment into the hair follicles. The hair pigmentation will create the appearance of a natural appearing shaved head of hair or a fuller head of hair if there are patchy areas of hair loss. Usually, the course of an SMP treatment looks like the following:

During an initial consultation, the Doctor Edges team will determine the right shade of pigment and what kind of hairline you wantAfter that comes the first treatment. The pigment will be applied to create each follicle, which can irritate the skin and form scabs. The scalp will appear red at first, but that fades in a few days. Scabs typically fall off within four days to reveal a light layer of pigment.

The second treatment is usually one month following. More pigment will be inserted to create the desired color and increase density. A darker shade is usually used during this phase. It will be the last opportunity to make any requests or ask any more questions about your SMP. Each round of treatment takes between three and five hours.

Sometimes there is a third treatment, if necessary. Some practitioners require a third treatment and others only recommend it if the pigment seems to be fading. If there is a third treatment, the pigment will be applied again to create a finished look.

Who is Scalp Micropigmentation for?

This is a great option for anyone looking for realistic, lasting results for their hair-loss struggles. It is often used as a solution for individuals experiencing hair loss, thinning hair, or those who want to create the illusion of a fuller head of hair by replicating the appearance of hair folliclesConditions like male pattern baldness, scarring types of hair loss, baldness at the crown of the head, receding hairline, and fixing hair transplant scars for men and women.

SMP Procedure Overview

The Doctor Edges team assesses the client's scalp condition, hair loss pattern, and overall suitability for the procedure. A customized treatment plan is developed based on the individual's needs and desired outcome.

The initial consultation is followed by the first treatment session, where the Doctor Edges team applies the initial layer of pigmentation. After a healing period, a second treatment session may be conducted to build upon the initial results and refine the appearance. If necessary, a third treatment session may be recommended during follow-up appointments to perfect the results or make adjustments. Patients can choose from three section options: frontal scalp, crown/posterior scalp, and front to back, allowing for an individualized approach based on individual preferences.

Periodic touch-up sessions over the years may be advised for maintenance. The overall number of sessions and duration of the process depend on individual factors, including the extent of the treatment area and desired results. Patients should follow aftercare instructions for optimal healing and long-lasting SMP results.

Natural Appearance:

  • SMP can achieve a very natural-looking result. The pigmentation is carefully applied to replicate the appearance of natural hair follicles, creating the illusion of a closely shaved head or denser hair.

Density and Coverage:

  • SMP can effectively add the appearance of density to areas of the scalp with thinning hair or bald patches. The level of coverage achieved depends on the individual's specific hair loss pattern and the treatment plan.

Hairline Design:

  • The design of the hairline is a crucial aspect of SMP. A well-designed hairline complements the individual's facial features and looks aesthetically pleasing. We work with the patients to determine the desired shape, height, and overall look of the hairline.

Color Matching:

  • The pigments used in SMP are selected to closely match the patient’s natural hair color. This attention to detail helps achieve a realistic appearance that blends seamlessly with any remaining natural hair.

Longevity:

  • The longevity of SMP results varies, but they can last for several years. Some fading may occur over time, especially with exposure to sunlight and other environmental factors. Periodic touch-up sessions are recommended to maintain the desired appearance.

Realistic Expectations:

  • It's important for individuals to consider realistic expectations about the procedure. While SMP can provide significant cosmetic improvement, it does not promote actual hair growth, and the results are cosmetic in nature.

What is the difference between Scalp Micropigmentation vs. Tattoos?

We are depositing pigment into the skin at a shallower depth than tattoos, only about 2mm into the dermis. We are making small micro dots, not shading or drawing lines as in tattoos. This provides a more natural appearance. We use only a medical-grade permanent pigment that decreases the risk of fading into different colors or appearing too saturated once it heals.

How do I prepare for a SMP treatment with a previous hair transplant?

While hairstyle is important, most patients just have to wash their hair before their appointment. If you are male, a low cut done with a 2 or 3 guard is best. Patients do not require any specific preparation, but it's important to note that they won't be able to drive themselves post-treatment. Local numbing will be administered before the procedure.

What is the downtime for a SMP procedure?

After an SMP treatment, there is virtually no downtime; it is simply important to adhere to the post-care instructions, particularly regarding hair washing, during the healing phase.

How soon can I resume regular activities after SMP?

It is recommended to refrain from intense exercise for three days. Avoid sweating, saunas, steam rooms, Jacuzzis, and other hot, damp environments during the initial three days post-SMP procedure. For the first week, avoid wearing tight hats that may cause friction on the treated area. Refrain from using powders, concealers, hair products such as gels and hair spray, or alcohol-based products on the scalp for two weeks after SMP.

Is SMP a painful procedure?

Patients are numbed locally, and the Doctor’s Edges team ensures that adequate numbing is applied in accordance with the patient's level of comfort.

What are the risks associated with getting a SMP treatment?

While micropigmentation procedures, like Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP), are generally considered safe, there are inherent risks. Potential issues include rare instances of allergic reactions to pigments and the risk of infection if proper hygiene is not maintained. Color changes and fading over time must also be considered as touch-ups may be necessary. Diligent adherence to pre- and post-procedure care instructions is essential in mitigating these risks for individuals undergoing micropigmentation.

FAQs

Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is an advanced cosmetic process that uses micro-needles to insert pigment into the hair follicles. The hair pigmentation will create the appearance of a natural, shaved head of hair. Usually, the course of an SMP treatment looks like the following: During an initial consultation, Dr. Ekpo’s team will determine the right shade of pigment and what kind of hairline you want. For most men & women, scalp micropigmentation results in the appearance of a freshly shaved head. The hairline can vary based on your natural hair pattern, but usually it can be whatever you want, including something youthful like the “edge-up.” The shaved appearance of scalp micropigmentation mimics real hair; no one will know that it is a hairline tattoo. Some men and most women do not want a freshly shaved look and prefer to use scalp micropigmentation for increasing hair density. Dr. Ekpo’s team can use the microneedles to insert pigment between strands of hair to create the look of thicker hair for those who have thinning hair. Scalp micropigmentation can also be used to cover scars on the scalp that stem from hair transplant surgery or an accident. The pigment can be inserted along and around the scar for realistic and stunning results. The scars will be invisible beneath the hair pigmentation.

The best candidates for scalp micropigmentation are those who are balding and thinning. Scalp micropigmentation can overcome the negative effects of balding with a freshly shaved look. The process is also recommended for men and women with thinning hair who want the appearance of higher hair density. People who are non-candidates for hair transplants or desire increased hair density after a hair transplant might find scalp micropigmentation to be an excellent solution. Dr. Ekpo recommends combining a hair transplant with SMP, especially in patients with a scarring form of hair loss that desire undergoing a hair transplant after the inflammation process of their hair loss is under control. Those who wish to conceal scars, burns, or birthmarks on the scalp are excellent candidates for scalp micropigmentation as well. The process can make those kinds of scalp marks practically invisible. Dr. Ekpo and her team can examine your hair loss to determine if this this is the best option for you.
