What Can I Expect Before my transplant and on my FUT Procedure Day?
First, you'll meet with our Doctor Edges physicians and hair restoration team. They will examine your scalp and evaluate the extent of your hair loss. Once it is determined that you're a good candidate for the surgery, you'll be scheduled for a one-day, outpatient procedure. On the day of the surgery, our expert physicians and hair restoration team will review the procedure with you, ensuring all your questions are answered and your expectations are aligned with realistic goals.
Next, the hair in the designated donor area (the back and possibly sides of the scalp) will be trimmed and a local anesthetic will be administered to numb the scalp. For FUT, a smaller area of hair is shaved compared to FUE, making it ideal for patients who do not want a large area of their head shaved, such as females and men who wear their hair longer and do not plan to wear it very short. Once the area is numbed, our expert physicians will remove a strip of hair from a predetermined location along the back or sides of the scalp. The scalp is then sutured shut using a trichophytic closure to close the excision.
As the scalp is being sutured, our highly trained team will dissect the hair follicles from the surrounding tissue under high-power magnification. With this precise method, more than 98 percent of the hair follicles survive the harvesting process, creating a greater yield of follicular units for transplantation. The grafts are then placed on ice to ensure they remain in optimal condition for transplantation.
The physicians and hair restoration team will then create small surgical recipient incisions in your designated thinning areas. The grafts are gently placed into the incision sites, with units containing 1-2 hairs placed along the hairline in front, and units with 3-4 hairs on the top and back of the head. This ensures natural-looking density and ultimately, the results you desire.
There is a true art to properly blending the newly transplanted hairs with your current growth. Our extraordinary hair restoration physicians and team have years of experience to help you achieve your hair goals. Your transplanted hair follicles will begin to heal quickly, as will the donor area at the back of your head.
What is the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) Procedure?
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a minimally invasive, outpatient surgical hair restoration technique that offers natural-looking and as close to permanent results. This procedure is ideal if you're concerned about a linear scar and prefer to wear your hair short. With FUE, there are no linear scars, and many people can resume their normal activities the very next day.
In an FUE procedure, individual hair follicles are extracted from your donor area and then transplanted to the balding or thinning areas. This method is most effective when hair thinning is minimal or when filling in smaller areas, such as the temples. FUE is suitable for individuals in the earlier stages of hair thinning or loss and can be used to achieve a fuller appearance with minimal disruption.

Next, the hair in the designated donor area (the back and possibly sides of the scalp) will be shaved, and a local anesthetic will be administered to numb the scalp. For FUE, a larger area of hair is shaved to evenly distribute where the grafts will be harvested, ensuring natural-looking results as the unharvested hair in the donor area grows back. Tiny, circular incisions are then made at the back and/or sides of your head to remove individual follicular units, which contain 1-4 hairs per unit. The grafts are harvested, extracted, and placed on ice to maintain optimal condition for transplantation.

Does the hair grow back in the donor area after it is removed?
A hair transplant procedure takes your own hair follicles from the back and sides of the head (donor area) and transplants them to thinning or balding areas (recipient area) resulting in a very natural appearance. Our physicians refer to the hair being moved from the donor area to the recipient area as “robbing from Peter (the donor area) to pay Paul (the recipient area)”.
Once the hairs from the donor area are moved to the recipient area, they will find a new home there and grow and will not grow in that same spot in the donor area. The results will however still look very natural in the donor area because our expert physicians and their team will evaluate your scalp to avoid over depleting this area.

Hair transplant surgery is suitable for individuals of various ages, provided they are healthy enough to undergo the procedure. Our clinic conducts thorough pre-operative evaluations to ensure patient safety and suitability for surgery.
Anyone who is healthy enough to undergo a multi-hour surgery with mild sedation can undergo hair transplant surgery. We have conducted successful hair transplant surgeries on several patients in their seventies with remarkable results. It really all depends on the general overall health of the individual. High blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic medical ailments can rule you out as a suitable candidate if not under control; however, if conditions are managed, they may not be a determining factor at all. All patients are required to undergo a pre-op evaluation with our internal medicine physician, Dr. Claiborne, who will determine if you are cleared to undergo hair transplant surgery. If you have underlying uncontrolled health conditions, Dr. Claiborne does an amazing job at restoring your health to get you ready to undergo a hair transplant.
Our expert hair restoration team performs hair transplants for all ages depending on the circumstances. For younger patients in their 20s, our exceptional hair restoration team provides realistic expectations so that you can enjoy your hair transplant for many years to come.
After your hair transplant, our expert physicians and hair restoration team will recommend maintaining the integrity of your pre-existing hair that was not transplanted with non-surgical options provided at Doctor Edges Hair Restoration.

How to remove scabs after a hair transplant
Gentle Rinsing and Shampooing
Regular gentle washing of your hair is extremely important after the surgery. One would think that this would disturb the grafts, however, if done properly, the chance of dislodging the grafts is minimal. Shampooing with baby shampoo using the cup method helps gently remove dead skin cells, dirt, blood, and oil preventing excessive crust or scab formation over the recipient sites, which can impair wound healing and hair growth. If you shampoo properly, scabs should normally be gone within a few days to 2 weeks at the most.
Conditioning
You may begin using the conditioner on day 7. When applying the conditioner, please allow it to sit for 5 minutes. This will significantly decrease scab formation.
To remove scabs and crust from the DONOR incision, use warm water and either a washcloth (while showering) or Q-tips and gently roll it across the suture line and in between the staples.
